You May Want To Consider Alcohol Detox Treatment

Almost everyone experiences withdrawal symptoms when they quit drinking.  After all, this is where hangovers come from.  Many of the withdrawal symptoms for moderate drinkers are merely a reaction by the body to realign the chemical imbalances that a night of heavy drinking has caused.  When your body synthesizes the alcohol you consume, it creates by products like sugars that are not part of your body’s regular chemical balance.  So the hangover symptoms are just signs that your body is getting its chemicals realigned.

For heavy drinkers, the withdrawal symptoms can be followed up quickly by cravings for more alcohol.  In severe cases, the cravings may even occur before the onset of withdrawals because your body has become so dependent on alcohol that the presence of alcohol in your bloodstream has become the norm.  If the heavy drinker, or alcoholic, is unable to fulfill the cravings with more alcohol then the withdrawal symptoms can become severe and some form of alcohol detox treatment might be necessary.

There is a way to determine your level of alcohol dependency by asking yourself some direct questions about your withdrawal symptoms.  For instance, do you get the shakes?  In other words, is it hard for you to do simple tasks like write clearly with a pen or pencil after a period of drinking?  Do you have feelings of anxiety after drinking?  Do your emotions seem out of balance?  In other words, do you feel depressed, irritated, or fatigued?  Do you have trouble thinking clearly?  Do you get cold sweats or sweaty palms?  Do you experience nausea or vomiting?  Do you have insomnia after a period of drinking?  Do you get a rapid or irregular heartbeat?

If you have answered “yes” to most of these questions, then you should consider reevaluating your relationship with alcohol and considering alcohol detox treatment to begin your sobriety.  Start looking at how frequently you drink and maybe even talk to an addiction specialist to see what their recommendations are.  If you continue on the path you are on, chances are your body is going to become even more dependent on alcohol than it already is and your withdrawal symptoms are only going to get worse.  Stopping drinking is going to get harder to do on your own as well.

For many people that have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms, the odds are that drinking alcohol hasn’t caused a great deal of trouble in their life.  They hold down steady jobs, have good relationships with their loved ones, and they haven’t suffered any legal consequences.  The trouble with this is that alcohol abuse and alcoholism are progressive disorders.  So if you or your loved ones notice a negative trend in what is occurring with alcohol in your life, then these are warning signs that should be heeded.  Don’t wait until you have a problem with alcohol, if you or your loved ones see one developing.
