Outpatient and Inpatient Care at Pathways

Pathways offers inpatient and outpatient care for clients experiencing substance use disorder. Outpatient treatment for substance use disorder (or any other medical condition) involves the client receiving care without staying overnight at a healthcare facility. Routine doctor’s office visits and weekly counseling sessions are two examples of outpatient care.

Inpatient care, conversely, involves 24/7 treatment or monitoring. You have received inpatient medical care if you have ever stayed overnight at a hospital. Pathways manages two inpatient facilities—a women’s center with eight available spots and a men’s center with six. Most inpatient clients stay at Pathways between 30 and 90 days.

Detoxification to Regular Inpatient Treatment

Many inpatient clients at Pathways begin with detoxification (or detox), which is the careful process of weaning someone off of alcohol or substances. Clients in detox are in active addiction, which means they would test positive off of a biological specimen (hair, blood, or urine, to name three). Withdrawal symptoms are almost always uncomfortable and, in severe cases, life-threatening. Proper detox at Pathways ensures clients go through the withdrawal process with minimal physical and mental discomfort.

After detox, clients can start regular inpatient treatment. You’ll start engaging in group, family, and individual group therapy sessions. Inpatient clients have 24/7 access to staff members, but they have a little more flexibility and free time. During this time, clients begin constructing a solid foundation for sobriety and recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

After inpatient treatment, most clients transition to a lower level of care, intensive outpatient rehab. In outpatient rehab, clients can return home after treatment each day. Pathways’ intensive outpatient clients usually spend nine hours per week receiving care at our facility. They have access to many of the same therapies regularly used by inpatient clients.

What is Dual Diagnosis?

A large percentage of clients do not achieve long-term sobriety without effective dual diagnosis treatment. Dual diagnosis refers to the strong correlation between substance use disorders and mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder. More than one-third of all people with substance use disorder are thought to have a co-occurring psychiatric disorder, and more than a quarter of people with a psychiatric disorder also live with substance use disorder.

Substance use disorders and mental illnesses are often deeply intertwined; some people use substances to try to manage the symptoms of a mental illness, while others develop mental illnesses after living with a substance use disorder for a long time. Treating all existing conditions is imperative for sustained recovery. Our staff will work tirelessly to uncover any undiagnosed mental health conditions you may have so your treatment is as comprehensive and effective as possible.

A Typical Day at Pathways

Inpatient clients at our facilities benefit from highly structured, meticulously scheduled days. We aim to maximize your time at Pathways by providing a wide variety of therapeutic interventions. Clients also have plenty of time to unwind and relax for a holistic experience.

Monday–Friday

Inpatient care at Pathways mimics the outside world in several ways. Weekdays, for instance, involve more “work” than weekends.

A typical weekday at Pathways might look something like this:

  • Rising and breakfast from 6–7 a.m.
  • Daily reflections from 7–8 a.m.
  • Medicine administration and house meetings from 8–9 a.m.
  • Meditation and check-ins from 9–10 a.m.
  • Relapse prevention from 10:15–11:30 a.m.
  • Lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 12:35 p.m.
  • Gym or recreation from 12:35–2:30 p.m.
  • Group sessions, relapse prevention education, or study groups from 3:15–5 p.m.
  • Dinner and break from 5–7 p.m.
  • NA (narcotics anonymous) or AA (alcoholics anonymous) from 7–8 p.m.
  • Free time and cleanup from 8–10 p.m.
  • Lights out at 10 p.m.

The above schedule may differ slightly based on individual clients’ circumstances.

Saturday and Sunday

Early weekend mornings at Pathways usually start the same way as weekday mornings, with breakfast, medication distribution, meditations, and check-ins occurring before 10 a.m. On Saturdays, we typically organize group outings that clients enjoy from 1 to 4 p.m. After Sunday lunches, many inpatient clients call family and loved ones from 1 to 4 p.m. Weekend evenings often involve in-house NA or AA meetings, movies, or health and wellness meetings.

We're here to help.

After Pathways, What Next?

Recovery is a lifelong commitment. Inpatient and outpatient treatment equip clients with the tools necessary to flourish in the outside world, but some type of ongoing care is essential. Pathways’ alumni program connects former and current clients and allows the sharing of wisdom, success stories, and challenges among a caring and understanding group of peers.

Isolation is a reliable precursor to relapse. We fight against that by offering weekly alumni meetings and other opportunities for members of the Pathways family to connect. Our alumni are often finding new ways to meet up and check in with each other, such as through virtual meetings or offsite activities.
